After receiving ostomy surgery there will be many experts available in the hospital during your stay. They will always be there to help and guide you to where you are comfortable doing it on your own. At first they will do everything for you while you watch and ask questions if you like. Then within a few days they will walk you through what they are doing and explain the products. Finally they will start to transition into you doing all of the work while they watch and answer questions or gently direct you. Their goal is to get you completely independent before you leave the hospital so you can successfully transition into a life with an ostomy bag. There are a few care techniques and ostomy supplies that they may not use in the hospital, but you might benefit from when you get home. Of course they will teach you the basics and what you need. But they may forget some convenient products that long-time ostomy bag users agree are definitely worth it. Those nurses only have to help change ostomies for a patient for a few days, the patient will ultimately have the bag for a few years (if the bag is temporary) or their entire life (if the bag is permanent). These are not products that are absolutely necessary for a healthy stoma, but they are an added bonus when it comes to daily care and routines. Adhesive Remover Wipe These are amazing when it comes to small little pieces of tape, glue, or spray that gets leftover when changing your ostomy bag or barrier. You may not need it the first few months as you are just getting used to all the new products you need to have with you at all times. You can always use a washcloth with soap and water to remove all adhesive, but these wipes can be far more convenient. They are the size of an alcohol pad, too, so very easy to carry around if you ever need to use one. Protective Barrier Wipe These wipes are also very easy to carry around as they are the same size as adhesive removers and alcohol pads. You could even store them all in one little pouch for easy access to all three products. Again, this product isn’t a necessity as you could just use gentle soap and water. But, especially on the go when you are in public, this product is much quicker to just pick up and use as a wipe and then discard. That way you don’t need to worry about carrying around and drying a washcloth.
