Not everyone fits into the whole motorcycle gang look. I would admit that I am most definitely a person that does not fit that whole mold. But I do enjoy riding motorcycles and feeling the open road on my face and body. Lots of people actually fit into that mold and many of them ride bikes, or use skateboards to feel the exact same way. But one thing many people don't know is that you can enjoy this hobby and even thrive in this hobby if you have had an ostomy. I have talked to some individuals who were so afraid they would have to give up some of their most favorite past times by having an ostomy. Luckily, I can assure most people that the majority of tasks and hobbies they enjoyed before are still available to them and in some cases are more available. So what do I mean by this. Being able to ride a motorcycle is a skill that is very much learned. It does not come naturally and lots of information and work goes into becoming a safe and skilled rider. Lots of people don't talk about some of the downsides of being on a motorcycle and that is having to go to the bathroom during a long ride. For some reason I always felt like I had to go a little more when I was riding verses when I was driving a car. But when you are stocked up with the right ostomy supplies you can ride a much longer amount of time without having to stop. That is just a cool fact that I love to point out when riding with friends. I would say that it is important to double up on gear just incase something does go wrong on your motorcycle ride. I mean rain happens and worst case scenario crashes do occur. I would say it is important to have a extra set of ostomy supplies somewhere on your motorcycle incase something does happen. Many motorcycles have extra storage on the bike itself and I prefer to put my things in a waterproof bag and stuff it in. Some of my motorcycles have a seat that comes off with a compartment underneath. Many people keep a manual or tools in this location and I put my gear there as well. There are also saddlebags that can be added to most motorcycles or my preference a tank bag. I love having my gear in front of me incase I need something fast. So get out and enjoy some happy biking!

When people think of ostomy procedures they usually only think about older people having them. People really only used to associate the surgery with older generations, but people have realized young adults can benefit from the surgery, too. What people often forget, though, is that infants can have a stoma and ostomy bags, too. There are many different reasons babies have to undergo an ostomy surgery. Some babies are born without a proper rectum or anal opening. The doctors have to create the stoma for waste while they design a plan to operate and correct this. Another reason babies have to have a urostomy is because there is an abnormal opening to the bladder. Still, some babies can be born with diseased or improper functioning bowels. Most of these situations are reversible. The baby just has to have the ostomy or urostomy for a short amount of time. Then, it can be reversed and the baby will go on to live a very normal life. It may be hard for parents at first when hearing their baby has to have an ostomy. Not only do they have to worry about having a baby (sometimes for the first time), but they also have to learn how to handle ostomy supplies and how to properly care for their baby’s ostomy. If their baby is experiencing issues, there is a high likelihood that the baby will remain in the NICU (newborn intensive care unit) for the duration of the stoma. Sometimes, though, the baby will get to go home with the parents after the surgery. In this case, nurses and healthcare professionals will assist the parents in learning how to handle ostomy supplies and how to care for the stoma. There really is not that much difference between an adult ostomy and an infant ostomy. The size, of course, will be much smaller for an infant. But the same supplies still apply. Instead of the parents learning how to change diapers and how to not irritate their bottom, these parents will have to learn how to change an ostomy bag and make sure the skin around the stoma is not irritated. Infants are usually not something to worry about when it comes to a stoma. They don’t move around that much and the stoma will stay in place. If a toddler is getting the surgery, there might be more of a concern. Because of how much toddlers move and jump, it might be hard to keep the stoma secure. Parents should look into ostomy belts when their child is playing to make sure the bag stays in place. After receiving ostomy surgery there will be many experts available in the hospital during your stay. They will always be there to help and guide you to where you are comfortable doing it on your own. At first they will do everything for you while you watch and ask questions if you like. Then within a few days they will walk you through what they are doing and explain the products. Finally they will start to transition into you doing all of the work while they watch and answer questions or gently direct you. Their goal is to get you completely independent before you leave the hospital so you can successfully transition into a life with an ostomy bag. There are a few care techniques and ostomy supplies that they may not use in the hospital, but you might benefit from when you get home. Of course they will teach you the basics and what you need. But they may forget some convenient products that long-time ostomy bag users agree are definitely worth it. Those nurses only have to help change ostomies for a patient for a few days, the patient will ultimately have the bag for a few years (if the bag is temporary) or their entire life (if the bag is permanent). These are not products that are absolutely necessary for a healthy stoma, but they are an added bonus when it comes to daily care and routines. Adhesive Remover Wipe These are amazing when it comes to small little pieces of tape, glue, or spray that gets leftover when changing your ostomy bag or barrier. You may not need it the first few months as you are just getting used to all the new products you need to have with you at all times. You can always use a washcloth with soap and water to remove all adhesive, but these wipes can be far more convenient. They are the size of an alcohol pad, too, so very easy to carry around if you ever need to use one. Protective Barrier Wipe These wipes are also very easy to carry around as they are the same size as adhesive removers and alcohol pads. You could even store them all in one little pouch for easy access to all three products. Again, this product isn’t a necessity as you could just use gentle soap and water. But, especially on the go when you are in public, this product is much quicker to just pick up and use as a wipe and then discard. That way you don’t need to worry about carrying around and drying a washcloth. |
