Having fun can mean a lot of different things for many kinds of people. I know that some people are crazy social and if they are not with others they are simply not enjoying themselves. On the other hand, some people need to be alone with their thoughts to recharge and to have a good time. Then there are those that simply like to be active and be social or be alone and just keep moving. Those are more kenestic people and when you are that type of active person and also have a stoma many people are rather surprised. Well, the thing is that most people who are that way and find out that they are slated for an ostomy are flat out terrified. That is part of why I wanted to write this article and let those people know that they are going to be ok. The world does not end after an ostomy surgery. In fact, you have a whole lot more life left in you and are going to be just fine.
I am a pretty active person. What I mean by that is that I enjoy being outside and doing lots of activities and moving things. My type of vacation that I enjoy the most is going to a national park and spending a week hiking the most complicated and hard trails. Hiking in Zion and doing Angels Landing while the entire trail was covered in ice was one of the most fun times of my life. It was also probably the most dangerous trail considering the weather conditions I have ever done and slid down a mountain with inches of death being on either side of you is amazing. Can you guess that I did it all with an ostomy bag on my side? Yes, indeed I did and that means that you can be just as active as you want.

See when I found out I was going to have a stoma and be stuck with ostomy gear on me all the time I got worried. I immediately started searching for information of people running, hiking, and being active with a stoma. I quickly found that it was going to be alright for me because flat out insane athletes with stomas existed. People who ran marathons and did ironman competitions were currently out there being more active or crazy then I would ever be. This gave me so much hope and it made me dive right into learning how to take care of my stoma and get the best ostomy gear for the right task. It turns out that in 2020 most of the things and in fact all of the things I wanted to do had already been done and the gear was already made for it and it does it super good. That is why I like to do crazy things to hopefully not only enjoy the things i enjoy in life but to give a little hope to others out there who need to know that you can pretty much do anything with a stoma.
Now I am sure it will disqualify you from certain jobs and careers, but when it comes to hobbies I have not found myself ot be limited due to my stoma on enjoying a fun and fully active life.
